Corn snakes belong to the sub-family Colubrinae, of the family Colubridae. All snakes of this type have no traces at all of hind legs. Corn snakes and rat snakes are commonly found in North America, as well as other parts of the world The corn snakes are non venemous, and many are suitable as pets. The fact that they are used to a wide range of temperatures makes them somewhat easier to keep than tropical or sub-tropical species. The "common" corn snake, Elaphe gutatta gutatta, is a very popular first snake for reptile owners. They are quite gentle, and they grow to limited sizes.
