The ball python is one of the smaller pythons. Because of it's limited size, and attractive colring it is a popular choice as a pet. This python typically grows to a maximum of 5 to 6 feet in length, and so it can be kept in a resonably sized terrarium. The proper name for the Ball Python is Python Regius (royal python). It gets it's common name from the fact that it often curls itself into a tight ball, with it's head tucked inside when it is scared. The ball python is native to West Africa, and a great many are imported into North America each year - some estimate as high as 80,000 imports. It is generally a calm, non agressive species, which accounts for much of it's popularity as a pet. Most are a tan and black pattern, although some other colorations are available, including albinos.
